Lyrics:
Col sorriso d'innocenza,
Collo sguardo dell'amor,
Di perdono, e di clemenza,
Deh! favella si al genitor.
Deh! favella al genitor
Digli, ah! digli che respiri,
Digli che sei libero per me;
Che pietoso un guardo ei giri
A chi tanto si, a chi tanto, a chi tanto a si per te opro
Translation:
With the smile of innocence,
With the glance of love,
Of clemency and pardon
Pray, speak to your Father.
Tell him, ah tell him that you live,
That you are free because of me
So that he may look mercifully
Upon the one who did so much for you.

This opera depicts the story of Switzerland's legendary founding fathers and a courageous 13th century folk hero, Wilhelm Tell, who symbolized the struggle for political and individual freedom. According to legend, Tell was forced to shoot an apple from his son's head after refusing to pay homage to a Hapsburg liege. His courage and famed marksmanship launched an uprising that brought the Swiss independence from the Hapsburg dynasty.
This recording is part of a music article performed by the Orchestra and Chorus of Rome's Academia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
